Winter Fruit Tree Pruning Workshop

This course has two parts:

  1. Four hours of indoor lecture with a PowerPoint presentation
  2. Two hours of pruning techniques demonstration at the SRJC Shone Farm

Covered Topics:

Basic Principals of Pruning Fruit and Nut Trees: Includes importance of sun and light exposure, vigor management, thinning and heading cuts, different bearing habits of species - spur bearing versus shoot bearing, tree spacing, tree planting, and young tree training.

Specific Pruning Instructions for Apple, Pear, Kiwi, Nectarine, Peach, Plum, Apricot, Cherry, Table Grapes, Fig, Persimmon, Olive, Feijoa, Citrus, and Loquat - also Almond and Walnut.

Insect, Disease, and Weed Control: Includes diseases reduced by pruning and other commonly occurring problems.

Outside Pruning Demonstration: Training and pruning at Shone Farm

The instructor is Paul Vossen, UC Cooperative Extension Emeritus Farm Adviser who has taught professional and back yard fruit trees pruning courses for 38 years.
