CLASS DESCRIPTION
This course prepares climbers for the most likely emergency scenarios. Participants will work through scenarios that may be encountered in the field and how to risk assess, manage the scene, evaluate the injury, and perform climber extraction. Using hands-on experience, our instructors will focus on emergency preparedness and accident prevention.
Other topics to be included are:
- First Aid
- Self-rescue
- Climber extrication, rescuer ascent and work positioning
- Most common tree rescue scenarios
- Working with first responders
Course Times: 8:00am – 3:00pm; lunch is provided.

We will be outside all day and under the trees so everyone must have a hardhat and safety glasses.
CEUs: Earn 6 ISA CEUs
International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborists, Utility Specialists, Municipal Specialists, and Tree Workers will be eligible to receive CEUs
SCHEDULE
8:00 am - 9:00 am
Job Briefing and Setting up for Success: OSHA/ANSI Requirement and Annex F - Stepping Process Flowchart and Job Briefing, what needs to be covered in a JSA/JHA, EAP, work plan, gear inspection, access lines, and throwlines.
9:00 am - 10:00 am
Assessing the Emergency: First Aid Kit Review, ANSI Requirement, Basic Training in First Aid, CPR and AED.
10:00 am - 11:00 am
Help is Arriving: Hazard Assessments/EHAP, Applicable Standards, Overview of EHAP, working with first responders, communication, and assisting.
11:00 am-12:00 pm Lunch (Lunch is Provided - please let us know about any dietary restrictions)
12:00pm - 1:00pm
Instructor Demonstration: Assessing the problem, Victim assessment, Gear assessment, Hazard Inspection from the ground, implementing EAP, ascending to the victim, secondary inspection (in the tree), moving the victim, and connections.
1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Break Out Groups, Practicals
2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Life support and stability, climbing system, SRS vs MRS, victim packaging, injury specific, descending with victim, rescuer positioning, speed and control, landing the victim, and hand-off to first responders.
3:00 pm- 3:30 pm
