Hawai?i Audubon Society is hosting Manu o Ku (White Tern) training for hands on tree workers on Saturday, November 15, 2025. There will be a morning session for commercial arborists and an afternoon session for the wider public. You can sign up for one or both sessions.

 Kapi?olani Community College (KCC), parking in Lot A. Please note Lots B, C and D will be closed for the weekly KCC Farmer’s Market

Cost
:
 $15.00. We have requested approval of 3 CEUs for those who are certified. Bento lunch is included.

The workshop features presentations by arborists from Donahue Arborist and Tree Solutions, Hui Manu o Ku lead & Hawai?i Audubon board member, Rich Downs, and Hawai?i Audubon Executive Director, Keith Swindle.
 
Learning objectives are:
  • Identifying and understanding Manu o Ku biology and breeding.
  • Recognizing cultural importance of the White Tern in Hawai?i.
  • Understanding legal protections and arborist responsibilities.
  • Learning to incorporate online tools into job planning.
  • Applying best management practices when trimming near active nests.
  • Understanding behavior-defined buffer zones and how to adjust work accordingly.
  • Spotting breeding activity from the ground and canopy.
  • Responding appropriately to emergencies involving chicks or injured adults.

The class size is limited to 20 people each session.
