James MacNair Presentation Description:

The presentation will provide an overview for reading and interpreting construction documents to determine probable impacts on trees designated for protection. A checklist outlining possible construction impacts will be discussed, with examples illustrated on grading, drainage, and utility plan excerpts. Also on the agenda is a historical project that involved many tasks as a consulting arborist on the project team. This discussion will provide ideas for possible work assignments a consulting arborist may provide for large projects.

Ryan Gilpin Presentation Description:

ISA released the 3rd Edition of the Managing Trees During Construction Best Management Practices in 2023. Ryan will discuss how this version has been reorganized around the 6 phases of construction typical on most projects, and some of the other big changes. Ryan will focus on two main aspects of the planning phase: permitting agency requirements and suitability for preservation. Cities or other agencies typically review plans and issue permits on construction projects. Understanding requirements about tree removal, mitigation and protection specifications can be key in successfully working as an arborist on construction projects as these tend to vary widely between agencies. Ryan will discuss how he uses suitability for preservation ratings can go beyond more common ratings such as condition and size, to help his projects as they move into the design phase.

Jonathan Flournoy Presentation Description:

The presentation will demonstrate using graphics editing software to create tree maps. Jonathan will go over the strengths and weaknesses of this approach. He will demonstrate how to overlay various construction plans (grading, irrigation, etc.) over the tree map to better estimate construction impacts. He will discuss the appropriateness of measuring detailed tree canopies and helpful tools to do so.
