Conference Description:

Dr. Ben Faber and Dr Jim Downer will give a complete fruit tree primer. We will cover growing conditions, hardiness zones, pruning practices, pollination and horticultural practices for "backyard" fruit tree growers. This presentation will be crafted for arborists that have clients with home orchards for whom they provide professional services. We will highlight pruning strategies that are based on fruit production and quality.

Biographies:

Dr.Jim Downer is an Advisor emeritus with the University of California Cooperative Extension in Ventura County. Dr. Downer’s academic training is from California Polytechnic Univ., Pomona, (BSc. horticulture & botany, 1981; MSc. Biology, 1983;. in 1998 he earned a Ph.D. in plant pathology, from University of California, Riverside. Over his 37 year tenure, Dr. Downer’s research focused on mulch, soil microbiology and disease suppression in mulched soils, diseases of shade trees and cultural practices to maintain landscape plants. Dr. Downer is a member of the American Society of Horticultural Science, the American Phytopathological Society, The International Soc. of Arboriculture (ISA), and the Western Chapter of the ISA (WCISA), Dr. Downer serves on the Board of the John Britton Fund for tree Research as the chair of the research advisory committee, and currently serves on the education committee for WCISA. Dr. Downer served on the WCISA Board and as president in 2015. Dr. Downer has a love of shade trees, Shinrin roku (forest bathing/walking) tree work, wood working, horses, gardening, horticulture and the study of plants and their biology. Dr. Downer resides in Ojai, Ca and Portal, Az.

Dr. Ben Faber has research experience in irrigation, pest management, plant nutrition and soil management. Current research on irrigation requirements of avocado and citrus, methods of controlling groundwater nitrate/pesticide pollution, effects of yardwaste mulches on avocado/citrus production, pest control in avocado/citrus, new crops/rootstocks/varieties evaluation and various methods for controlling micronutrient deficiencies in subtropical tree crops are all ongoing studies. He works along the California coast where many different subtropical crops are grown with poor water quality and truly difficult irrigating conditions. He holds several degrees: BS Biology, UCSC; MS in Pomology, UCD; MS Soil Science, UCD; and PhD Soil Microbiology, UCD. He has been with the UCCE since 1990 after spending 2 years DWR testing CIMIS ET Network and 2 years Peace Corps Togo
