Course Information
This 3-day course and exam is open to interested parties who meet the prerequisites (see Tree Risk Assessment Qualification Application Guide) and is limited to 20 arborists (first-come/first-served). The qualification consists of a 2-day educational course followed by a 1/2 day assessment that includes both a written and field component. It is required that you attend the course and successfully complete the assessment in order to receive this qualification.
Registration closes on September 20, 2024 or when class is filled. All payments are due at the time of registration. Cancellation/refund requests must be submitted by September 20, 2024. All applications will be reviewed for approval. Your registration will be finalized via email. NO REFUND OR TRANSFER WILL BE GRANTED AFTER September 20, 2024.

What to bring to class:
- Your government-issued photo ID
- TRAQ Manual and Workbook
- Hard hat and high-visibility vest or shirt (Needed on Day 2)
- #2 pencils and clipboard for taking notes
- Rain gear, including large zip-lock bag
Please dress for your comfort level indoors and outdoors; we cannot always control the room temperature to suit everyone. Come prepared to spend part of the day outdoors.
Confirmation Packet:
You will receive a confirmation packet containing a letter with the date and time of the course and the name of the appropriate contact person. The confirmation packet includes one copy each of the Tree Risk Assessment Manual, TRAQ Clipboard, and Tree Risk Assessment Workbook. Individuals taking a retake exam will not receive a new manual or workbook. No refunds or discounts are given if you already own the Tree Risk Assessment Manual.
Confirmation packets will be shipped to the address provided on the personal information registration page. Please provide a physical shipping address.
ISA cannot ship to a PO box.
Prerequisites:
To earn a Tree Risk Assessment Qualification you must hold or have held one of the following prerequisites. Please indicate which prerequisite(s) can be used to verify your eligibility:
- For non-ISA credentials, please submit a copy of a certificate, credential identification card, diploma, or similar documentation.
- Current ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualified holder registering to re-qualify
- ISA Certified Arborist Number
- ISA BCMA Number
- Society of American Foresters (SAF) Certified Forester
- Arboriculture, Urban Forestry, Traditional Forestry, or Horticulture Degree from an accredited college or university
- Others listed in the TRAQ application guide

James Komen is a Board Certified Master Arborist and Registered Consulting Arborist. He has been published in two academic journals, presented at the ASCA and ISA annual conferences, and taught and co-taught multi-day training courses on tree risk assessment and tree appraisal. High energy and excitement define his teaching philosophy. While concepts, terms, and definitions are clearly demarcated in class, he emphasizes not only getting the “right” answer, but providing adequate justification.
