As a species with the broadest global ornamental distribution of any California native tree, yet with the smallest extant native range of any conifer indigenous to the Golden State, the Monterey cypress is a plant of uncommon cultural import around the world. This session will share horticulture methods of the global urban forest for this unique conifer, including an exploration of its distinct anatomy and ensuing management implications. The exemplary arboriculture practices of root crown excavations, air pruning container cultivation of nursery stock, and lessons from seasonal proactive risk mitigation for a large Arboretum collection of post-mature cypresses will be highlighted.
SPEAKER BIO: Josh Gevertz is the Arboretum Director at Cypress Lawn Arboretum and Memorial Park in Colma, California, U.S.A., a role he has served in since January of 2020. As an ISA certified arborist and qualified tree risk assessor, Josh manages the collaborative care and stewardship for nearly 4000 trees across more than 300 acres of cemetery land.
As co-chair of the Education Committee in the Western Chapter of ISA, Josh coordinates and hosts many arborist professional development programs, including regional conferences, TRAQ and Tree Care for Birds & Wildlife workshops, and both indoor and outdoor lecture seminars.
Josh’s diverse academic background includes a Biological Sciences BS from the University of California at Davis and a master's degree from UC Berkeley's College of Environmental Design.
