Wetland Adaptations for Extraordinary Habitats
Presenter: Dana Willson
Description: This webinar introduces the science and ecology of wetlands through the lens of trees and plant adaptations. It begins with a clear definition of wetlands and a brief overview of how wetlands in the United States have been understood and regulated over time. From there, the session explores the basic biogeochemistry of wetland soils—especially the redox processes that shape oxygen availability—and offers a concise explanation of aerobic and anaerobic respiration to illustrate why most plants struggle to survive in saturated soils. It will look at several common wetland tree species found in California and the western United States and examine the distinctive adaptations that allow them to thrive in low-oxygen environments. The webinar concludes with a survey of key wetland plant adaptations and an invitation to use tools like iNaturalist to observe and document wetland species in the field.
Speaker Bio: Dana Willson is a well versed environmental and arboricultural professional. He cut his teeth working part time as a brush dragger for a local municipality. He was able to parlay that into a full-time position that allowed him to obtain his CDL, pesticide license, and arborist certification. From there, Dana decided to go back to school so he could combine his arboricultural experience with a scholarly foundation in environmental science and GIS. He graduated with a Master of Forest Resources and Conservation with a concentration in wetland sciences. He also obtained a graduate certificate in wetlands and water restoration and a second in geospatial analysis. Since graduating, Dana has also obtained his TRAQ, a UAS (drone) pilot's license, and even obtained his BCMA. Currently, he works as an environmental consultant delineating wetlands and streams, conducting tree inventories, and of course creating interactive and static maps of the data collected in the field before compiling reports. He also works as a consulting arborist providing expert advice, second opinions, tree risk assessments, and appraisals.
