Get ready for an engaging, hands-on workshop with Dr. John Ball focused on the essentials of arborist safety, practical pruning, and the latest industry standards. Safety, Standards & Smart Pruning will highlight important updates related to the new ANSI Z133 standard, while giving participants the opportunity to explore real-world tools and techniques, including PAR meters for looking at trees, shade, and site conditions in a more interactive way. This is not just another slide presentation — it is a practical learning experience designed to bring safety, standards, and smart tree care into the field.

Agenda:

7:30am Registration Opens
8:00am Overview of the new Z133-2026.
A review of the Z133 history and purpose along with a discussion of the major changes in the most recent revision.
9:00am Felling and pruning risks.
Struck-by incidents during manual tree removals and pruning are the most frequent tree worker fatal and severe non-fatal incidents. This presentation will focus on the most common incidents and the Z133 standards to reduce these events.
10:00am Climbing and aerial device operation risks
Fall incidents from trees or aerial devices represent the second highest frequency of injuries to tree workers. We will cover the most common causal agents in these incidents.
11:00am Working near electrical hazards.
Electricity represents a hazard to all tree workers whether they are climbers, aerial device operators, ground workers or even plant health care providers! This presentation will cover the basic distribution system, the hardware on poles and the new Z standards for working within an electrical hazard.
12:00pm Lunch Provided
1:00pm Pruning mature trees: to the tree or for the tree?
Pruning is the most common tree care practice. But are we pruning for the tree or to it? This presentation will cover the stresses imposed on trees by our pruning practices and how we can minimize stresses while maximizing the benefits.
2:00pm Pruning versus training
We prune mature trees too much and do not train our young tree enough! This session will cover the basic steps to training our young trees.
