Soil School Description:

Soil School for Arborists teaches basic soil science in a field setting. The meeting convenes Thursday morning in the White Mountains east of Bishop, California. Meeting costs cover lodging, food, handouts, and instruction. Twenty-two hours of arborist credits are awarded for this meeting. There are also opportunities to see the ancient bristlecone pine forest, hike, bird watch, and relax in a very remote setting. We will  touch on all areas of soil science from land forms, soil biology, chemistry, and physics. Basic soil experiments and analyses will be conducted and emphasis will be placed on analyzing soils in a  field setting. Specific exercises will cover soil bio-assays, basic mineral nutrient contents, soil salinity analysis, soil bulk density calculation, water infiltration, soil moisture determination and soil textural  analysis. There will be evening "campfires" movie night and Jim's coffee.

Soil School is an intensive three day, hands-on, field course in soil assessment, analysis, and biology. Dr. James Downer, Tracey Takeuchi, and David Kelley are the instructors. Field trips each day will occur within the White Mountains giving attendees a chance to view soils in high mountain meadows, the brisltecone pine forest, and at lower elevations in the oak/juniper woodland. The course is at an elevation of ten thousand feet. There will be hiking and walking. Lectures will  be given each day as well as a film on soils. Meals and lodging are included. Dogs are NOT allowed at the Station. Do not bring pets.
