When we plant containerized or B&B trees and shrubs, the goal is to get roots established into the native soil. Therefore, we need to remove all the barriers that interfere with establishment: the baskets, burlap, twine, and media. While root washing and corrective pruning is controversial to some in the industry, ongoing research demonstrates that this new procedure leads to substantial increases in tree establishment and survival. Not only do roots establish faster, but flawed root systems can be corrected and the tree will be planted at grade.

Dr. Linda Chalker-Scott is Washington State University’s Extension Urban Horticulturist and ISA certified arborist, bringing science-based information to gardeners and landscape professionals.
