Webinar Description:

Roots are the sometimes-hidden parts of trees. We often do visual inspections as arborists, but how do we see and opine about things under the soil? The growing of trees in areas where people live brings new opportunities for roots to interact with people’s improvements and infrastructure. What are some of the solutions for these challenges?

We have learned we can root prune more roots than just staying outside the dripline. We have also experienced failures from root cutting inside the dripline. While there is no simple answer or chart, there are steps and practices we can follow to make the best decisions to manage the roots that grow from trees. After all, a healthy tree has to have healthy growing roots…

Instructor Biography:

Gordon Mann is a partner in California Tree and Landscape Consulting, Inc., owner of Mann Made Resources, and co-founder of TREES ROI. He has served as the SMA representative on the A300 Committee and is the current SMA alternate, and serves on the current re-writing of Part 1, Part 6, and Part 9. He has reviewed the ISA BMP's on pruning, root management, and construction. He is passionate about standards and BMP's and performing quality work. Past President of WCISA, ASCA, CAA, and currently on the CaUFC Board. Gordon just completed his service on the ISA Board Of Directors. He also serves on the Western Chapter’s Credentialing committee and facilitates exams in Northern California.

During Gordon's work for municipalities, the Sacramento Tree Foundation, and as a consultant, he prides high quality work and following industry standards and BMP's. Many times we have exceptions to the Standards and BMP's and those have to be properly explained. When writing reports for clients, the agencies have a series of criteria to meet or explain, and Gordon enjoys finding the solutions that meet the agency criteria in a reasonable manner.
